Today I attended the press conference held at the UTA's TRAX maintenance facility which is the former ZCMI warehouse at 2100 South and 900 East.

Not only is the Frontlines program 50% finished, but it was also announced that both the West Valley and Mid Jordan TRAX lines will open on the same day August 7, 2011. I am surprised that UTA would try to open two extensions on the same day. I know of no transit agency that has pulled that off at least in last 30 years (correct me if I am wrong).

The day will be a great day in the region for improving our transportation options throughout the area.

West Valley TRAX Construction Update

Welcome!

Construction progresses on the West Valley TRAX Line. To keep business and traffic impacts to a minimum, this five-mile project has been separated into seven construction “reaches,” or segments, for management and planning purposes.

A description of what is happening in each area is listed below. If you need further construction information, please call our toll-free 24-hour hotline at (888) 800-8854.

Reach 1

Reach Description: Reach 1 is the area along Constitution Boulevard (2700 West) from West Valley City Hall at 3600 South, extending north to 3100 South. This area includes both large and small businesses, as well as many residents. Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained.



Current Construction:

· Crews are working on station canopies near West Valley City Hall.

· Work continues on light poles and fencing in this area.

· Crews are installing landscaping and irrigation along Constitution Boulevard.



Reach 2

Reach Description: Reach 2 is the area along 3100 South from Constitution Boulevard to Decker Lake Drive. The Maverick Center and a few other businesses are located in this reach, as well as residents on either side of 3100 South. Access will be maintained and we will coordinate our efforts to maintain access to the Maverick Center. When TRAX is completed along 3100 South, it will operate on the south side of the roadway.



Current Construction:

· Work continues at the station platform located at Decker Lake Drive and 3100 South.

· Crews are working on curbs and sidewalks near the Maverick Center at 3100 South and Decker Lake Drive.



Upcoming Construction:

· Crews will place the final layer of asphalt over the intersection at 3100 South and Decker Lake Drive toward the end of the month. More information will be included in next week’s update.



Reach 3

Reach Description: Reach 3 is the area along Decker Lake Drive from 3100 South to Research Way (2770 South) and east to Redwood Road. This area includes many commercial office buildings with thousands of employees. We will continue to work with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction:

· Crews continue driveway work along the north side of Research Way between Redwood Road and Decker Lake Drive. Access to businesses will be maintained.

· Crews are working on overhead wiring along Decker Lake Drive.

· Crews continue laying tracks across Redwood Road at Research Way (2770 South). This work is scheduled to take place for the next three weeks but will be phased to allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction on Redwood Road. Access to businesses will be maintained throughout this portion of construction.



Reach 4

Reach Description: Reach 4 runs through the Chesterfield residential area along 2770 South and along the Decker Lake Canal and the Crosstowne Trail. We will work with residents to ensure a safe working environment that provides access to their properties.



Current Construction:

· Significant work has been accomplished in the Chesterfield area. Crews continue to work on the rail and other items.





Reach 5

Reach Description: Reach 5 includes construction along 1070 West in the Chesterfield industrial area. This reach includes one bridge structure over the Jordan River and another over 900 West.



Current Construction:

· The southbound lane on 1070 West just north of 2320 South is scheduled to open to vehicular traffic on Monday, Aug. 16. The northbound lane of traffic is scheduled to open in the next few weeks.

· Work will continue along the center of 1070 West throughout the summer months.

· Work also continues on the Jordan River Bridge and tunnel.



Traffic Impacts: There are various lane restrictions on 1070 West; however, access to businesses is being maintained.



Reach 6

Reach Description: Reach 6 runs through the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard area. Although there are no businesses and residents, extensive coordination will take place to ensure that freight deliveries and other train travel is maintained. Reach 6 includes an extensive bridging system that will enable TRAX to operate over other train traffic.



Current Construction:

· Progress continues on the TRAX bridge structures over 900 West at approximately 2200 South and also at the Union Pacific Railroad Roper Yard area.

· Work is also taking place on the overhead electric system.



Reach 7

Reach Description: Reach 7 is the area where the West Valley TRAX Line will connect with the current north/south line. Construction is taking place along Andy Avenue in South Salt Lake. Crews will closely coordinate activities with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction:

· Track work continues near Andy Avenue near 300 West in South Salt Lake City.

· Track construction is scheduled to begin on the east side of 300 West at Andy Avenue next week. Crews will distribute rails and ties and place ballast at that time.

Reach 6 – Progress continues on the TRAX bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard.

A few hours on UTA and some upcoming articles

Yesterday I had a few hours to kill so I naturally decided to spend some time riding TRAX and some UTA buses.

First of all I started by walking to the Meadowbrook TRAX station from the area around 4000 South and State. A few days ago I made some comments about the new development going in south of 3900 South and I pointed out some of the problems current facing the complex. Well I discovered another one. There is no sidewalk currently on the south side of 3900 South from West Temple to Main.

In fact the southwest corner of Main and 3900 is a death trap. There is no way for cars trying to turn right onto Main or even going straight to see a pedestrian that is trying to cross the street from that point. I did it and lived to tell about it but this is another reason that I do not see that new development being a true TOD development.

Once I got to the station I decided to take the first train that came along and that was a University to Sandy train with two of the ex-San Jose UTDC/Bombardier light rail vehicles. The car I rode in was squeaking really bad but hopefully these will be replaced by the new S70 cars next year.

I didn't mention it in my article on TOD but the new development at the former Smith's store at 7800 South and State is another example of TAD. It is playing on the fact that it is near a TRAX station but the development is clearly auto centric and because of the lack of amenities nearby (except of an excellent burger joint and a couple of restaurants) will do nothing to decrease car trips.

After arriving at the Sandy Civic Center Station the train went out of service and since the only bus in sight was the 811 and I didn't feel like heading to Utah County, I hopped the northbound train to Central Station.

The new TRAX Express concession building is nearly complete at the Sandy Civic Center Station. Hopefully this will prove to be a success since so many TRAX stations are far conveniences. I also noted that there has been a lot of progress in the last couple of weeks at the 6200 South TRAX station where the new Mid Jordan line will tie in with the existing line. I also noted that the turnouts for the West Valley line have been put in.

I took TRAX all the way to central station and decided to walk over to the bus area and catch the first bus that came along. The first thing I have noticed is that a shelter has been installed over the bus boarding area. Not a real bus shelter but one of those canvas shelters used when camping and for outdoor parties and such. I am sure that bus riders will not mind having some shade from the hot summer days.

The first bus boarding as I approached the bus area was a 217 but there was a large number of people getting on so I waited for the bus behind it which was the 240 and jumped on it. This is the first time that I had the chance to ride this route since it was created during the bus realignment.

There was no one on board as we left central station and only person other person boarded before we jumped on the freeway and headed to Redwood Road. By the time the bus turned onto Decker Lake Blvd the driver was running a couple of minutes early so we sat and waited for time. We were riding in one of the oldest buses currently in the UTA fleet, a 1997 Gillig Phantom. While the bus may be older, it still is holding up better than the low floor buses that will soon replace this one.

In fact, once the 1996 and 1997 Gillig Phantoms are retired UTA will basically have an all low floor bus fleet except for the MCI Commuter Cruisers. While I know low floor buses make it easier for people with disabilities get on and off, I still dislike how much seating capacity goes down with a low floor and the quality just doesn't seem to stack up.

I decided since I had not had the opportunity to ride MAX since the bus lanes open I would give it a shot. The other person on the bus got off along 3100 South giving me a bus to myself for a few blocks. However, that would not have lasted long if I didn't get off at 3500 South since there was a fairly good crowd getting on when I disembarked.

I walked over to the MAX stop and waited for the bus to come. After about a 8 minute wait I boarded Van Hool bus number 09104 with a couple of other passengers. With the lack of seating capacity on the Van Hool's it doesn't take much of a crowd to fill up the seating capacity but I had no problem finding a seat on the left had side of the bus.

After crossing Bangerter Highway the bus enters the new bus lanes. While the lanes made have saved a couple of minutes, all the time saved was loss as the bus had to wait in an attempt to cross the road in order to turn right onto 2700 West. After making a loop pass the future TRAX station we headed toward to Millcreek TRAX station.

People who read this blog often know that I am not a fan of BRT or as I call it Badly Repackaged Transit. This is especially true of MAX which is supposed to have off bus fare collection but few use it, the bus lanes save little time, there is no next bus information, and

I once again boarded the first TRAX came that came along which was once again heading toward downtown. I was getting hungry at this point so I decided to head to the City Creek Center's Food Court and see what was available there.

Among the choices were: Red Iguana, Bocata, Sbarro, Suki Hana, Great Steak, Chang Chun, and McDonald's. Soon there will also abe a Roxberry's and Subway. Except for the Red Iguana its pretty much standard sub par mall offerings but I was in the mood for Chinese so I tried Chang Chun. The food was good and the price reasonable so I can't complain.

I then boarded a TRAX train back to 3900 South that ended my journey for the day.

Today I also took a shorter trip in order to head to a function I had to attended at 6:00pm so I rode the 213 and caught a northbound TRAX train.

There was a fairly good load on the 213 with a number of people getting on and off along the way. In fact I believe we stopped at every single stop along the 1000 east stretch of the route. You have to wonder if BRT is started along 1300 East how much the 213 would be cut back and how it would affect service along the route.

I then rode TRAX to the Murray Central TRAX station. The car I rode in seemed to have a flat spotted wheel as it had a distinct thumb while moving. I had to walk to Vine then over to 300 West then south toward 5300 South to reach my destination. As I have pointed out in the past, Murray has done little to connect both sides of the tracks so to speak in this area.

You have the new developments on the east side including the IHC Death Star as many people call it which was poorly designed to and doesn't integrate well with the TRAX station. Then you have the 300 West corridor on the far side of the UP and future Front Runner tracks that have not been given easy access to the TRAX station. Hopefully as the station becomes an even more important transportation hub with the addition of Front Runner South, Murray will see fit to blend the areas together and make access easier.

I also wanted to give you a heads up on some article ideas I am working on. I will guarantee how fast each individual article will be put on the blog but keep an eye out.

Reach 1

Reach Description: Reach 1 is the area along Constitution Boulevard (2700 West) from West Valley City Hall at 3600 South extending north to 3100 South. This area includes both large and small businesses, as well as many residents. Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.



Current Construction:

· Overhead electric poles are being installed near West Valley City Hall and Constitution Boulevard.

· Crews continue working on the rail and the ballast in the center of Constitution Boulevard.



Upcoming Construction:

· Concrete work will continue next week on grade landings, ramps and steps.

· Crews will continue working on irrigation and landscaping items near Market and Lehman Streets.



Traffic Impacts: There currently are minor lane restrictions along Constitution Boulevard, although access is being maintained.



Reach 2

Reach Description: Reach 2 is the area along 3100 South from Constitution Boulevard to Decker Lake Drive. The E Center and a few other businesses are located in this reach, as well as residents on either side of 3100 South. Access will be maintained throughout construction and we will work with the E Center so you can continue to visit the great events they have to offer. When TRAX is completed along 3100 South, it will operate on the south side of the roadway.



Current Construction:

· Work continues on the TRAX bridge approaches over I-215 on the south side of 3100 South.

· Crews are distributing rail and ballast on the south side of 3100 South between Maple Way and Decker Lake Drive.

· Crews are currently installing rail on the south side of 3100 South and Decker Lake Drive intersection. Please obey speed limits.

· Work on the overhead electric system is also taking place near Decker Lake Drive and 3100 South.



Upcoming Construction:

· Curbs and sidewalks are scheduled to be poured at 3100 South in the next few weeks.



Traffic Impacts:

· Traffic control is in place along 3100 South; however, access is being maintained.



Reach 3

Reach Description: Reach 3 is the area along Decker Lake Drive from 3100 South to Research Way (2770 South) and running east to Redwood Road. This area includes many commercial office buildings. We will continue to work with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction:

· Track and station work continues in the center of Decker Lake Drive.

· Underground utility work continues along Research Way.

· We encourage motorists to please obey the posted speed limits along Decker Lake Drive.




Upcoming Construction:

· Decker Lake Drive is open to north/south traffic (see map to the right) –Decker Lake Drive is now open to north/south traffic on the east side of the road. This configuration will be in place until further progress is made at the 3100 South intersection. We thank the businesses for their support and patience.

· Utility and road construction on Research Way between Decker Lake Drive and Redwood Road – this portion of road work is currently under construction as crews move utilities. The remainder of work is scheduled to take place during Spring 2010 – access will be maintained.

· Redwood Road track crossing – this portion of work is scheduled to take place during Spring 2010 – access will be maintained.



Traffic Impacts: Currently, there are lane restrictions along Decker Lake Drive and Research Way but access is being maintained.



Reach 4

Reach Description: Reach 4 runs through the Chesterfield residential area along 2770 South and proceeds along the Decker Lake Canal and the Crosstowne Trail. We will work with residents to ensure a safe working environment and access to their properties throughout construction.



Current Construction:

· Significant work has been accomplished in the Chesterfield area. Crews continue to work on the rail and other items in this area.





Reach 5

Reach Description: Reach 5 will include construction along 1070 West in the Chesterfield industrial area. This reach will include one bridge structure over the Jordan River and another over 900 West.



Current Construction:

· Crews will resume work on 1070 West during the first part of April. Crews will then form and pour curb, gutter, sidewalk and driveways. We will meet with businesses as we get closer to construction.

· Trenches are filled and temporarily paved for winter.

· Crews are working on the overhead wiring system.

· Work continues on the Jordan River bridge and the pedestrian and bike tunnel.



Traffic Impacts: As construction proceeds, there will be lane restrictions, although access will be maintained.



Reach 6

Reach Description: Reach 6 runs through the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard area. Although there are no businesses and residents, extensive coordination will take place to ensure that freight deliveries and other train travel is maintained. Reach 6 includes plans for an extensive bridging system that will enable TRAX to operate over other train traffic.



Current Construction:

· Progress continues on the TRAX bridge structures over 900 West at approximately 2200 South and at the Union Pacific Railroad Roper Yard area.

· Work is also taking place on the overhead electric system.



Reach 7



Reach Description: Reach 7 is the area where the West Valley Line will connect with the current north/south TRAX Line. Construction will take place along Andy Avenue in South Salt Lake. Crews will closely coordinate activities with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction:

· Progress continues on the TRAX bridge approaches on either side of 600 West.

· Crews will begin drainage and continue track work throughout April.



Traffic Impacts: Currently there are no traffic impacts on Andy Avenue.

Reach 1

Current Construction:

· Crews completed the majority of work on the east side of Constitution Boulevard ahead of schedule and are now focusing on the west side of the roadway. Traffic is now operating on the east side of Constitution Boulevard. Please support the businesses in this area currently experiencing heavier construction.

· Progress continues on the station platform between West Valley City Hall and the Public Safety Building. Pedestrian access is being maintained between West Valley City Hall and the Public Safety Building. Please look for directional signage.







Construction at the West Valley City hub is estimated at 60% complete







Construction on Constitution Boulevard is now estimated at 50% complete



Upcoming Construction:

· Crews will continue to replace fencing on the west side of Constitution Boulevard with temporary fencing.

· Crews will be installing rail in the tail track area near West Valley City Hall.



Traffic Impacts: Traffic on 2700 West between 3100 South and 3500 South is operational on the east side of the road. Please be mindful of construction crews and obey posted speed limits.



Reach 2

Reach Description: Reach 2 is the area along 3100 South from Constitution Boulevard to Decker Lake Drive. The E Center and a few other businesses are located in this reach, as well as residents on either side of 3100 South. Access will be maintained throughout construction and we will work with the E Center to coordinate our efforts so you can continue to visit the great events they have to offer. When TRAX is completed along 3100 South, it will operate on the south side of the roadway.



Current Construction: Crews continue to build the TRAX bridge approach between Maple Way and I-215. Work also continues on the actual bridge crossing I-215 south of 3100 South. Utility work also continues at the E Center.



The I-215 Bridge is now estimated at 90% complete



Work on 3100 South is now estimated at 60% complete



Upcoming Construction:

· Nighttime construction is taking place on the TRAX bridge over I-215 on the south side of 3100 South. Noise impacts are anticipated to be minimal. Residents are encouraged to call the 24-hour hotline number at (888) 800-8854 with questions or concerns.



Traffic Impacts: Currently there are lanes restrictions on 3100 South; however, access is being maintained.



Reach 3

Reach Description: Reach 3 is the area along Decker Lake Drive from 3100 South to Research Way (2770 South) and running east to Redwood Road. This area includes many commercial office buildings with thousands of employees who access this area on a daily basis. We will continually work with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction: Decker Lake Drive is now closed for three months to accelerate the TRAX construction schedule. Access is being maintained through the detours listed below. Businesses are encouraged to call the hotline at 888-800-8854 if issues arise.


Reach 4

Reach Description: Reach 4 runs through the Chesterfield residential area along 2770 South and proceeds along the Decker Lake Canal and the Crosstowne Trail. We will work with residents to ensure a safe working environment that provides access to their properties throughout construction.



Current Construction: Significant work has been accomplished in the Chesterfield area. Crews continue to place ballast and rail throughout this area. Rail has been installed at the Lester Street crossing between Claybourne Avenue and Southgate Avenue.



Upcoming Construction: Construction on the eastbound track will begin toward the end of July. We appreciate your patience.



Traffic Impacts:

· The Crosstowne Trail along 2770 South just east of Redwood Road to the Brighton Canal has been paved but will remain closed until TRAX is completed in this area.





Reach 5

Reach Description: Reach 5 includes construction along 1070 West in the Chesterfield industrial area. This reach will include one bridge structure over the Jordan River and another over 900 West.



Current Construction:

· Water line work continues on the east side of 1070 West until mid September.

· Work continues on the Jordan River bridge and pedestrian and bike tunnel.



Upcoming Construction: After utility work is complete in this reach, crews will begin work on the curb, gutter and roadway on the west side of 1070 West, which should last until the end of the summer season. Construction is anticipated to take place for the next several months.



Traffic Impacts: As construction proceeds, there will be lane restrictions, although access will be maintained.



Reach 6

Reach Description: Reach 6 runs through the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard area. Although there are no businesses and residences, extensive coordination will take place to ensure that freight deliveries and other train travel is maintained. Reach 6 includes plans for an extensive bridging system that will enable TRAX to operate over other train traffic.



Current Construction: Significant progress continues on the TRAX bridge structures over the Roper Yard area near 2200 South and 600 West. Crews are also excavating the TRAX guideway just south of SR 201 between the Jordan River and 900 West. Construction is proceeding just east of 900 West along the south side of SR 201.



Upcoming Construction: Crews continue to work on the TRAX bridge structures. Coordination will continue with the Union Pacific Railroad to install utilities and bridge structures.



Traffic Impacts: Not applicable. This is a Union Pacific Railroad work area.



Reach 7

Reach Description: Reach 7 is the area where the West Valley Line will connect with the current north/south TRAX Line. Construction will take place along Andy Avenue in South Salt Lake. Crews will closely coordinate activities with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction: Roadway construction is currently underway along Andy Avenue. We thank businesses for their support during this phase of construction.



Upcoming Construction: Roadway work will continue on Andy Avenue throughout the next few weeks. Crews will then work on the waterway and slope protection under I-215.



Traffic Impacts: Flaggers are on sight to direct traffic and access will be maintained during construction

Pedestrians wishing to access the Public Safety Building and West Valley City Justice Courts are required to go through the West Valley City Hall main lobby. Third party utility work continues along the east side of Constitution Boulevard and crews are currently clearing and excavating the area in preparation for the new sidewalk, curb and gutter. Upcoming Construction: The entrance to Constitution Boulevard at 3360 South is scheduled to close for construction in the next couple of weeks. During this temporary closure, residents in the neighborhood east of Constitution Boulevard will be required to use Maple Way at 3100 South. As we get closer to the temporary closure, we will meet with residents and provide more details. Construction is scheduled to begin on the West Valley Library property on June 1st. Access will be maintained at the west side entrance to the library and patrons will be able to park in the west parking lot. The library will remain open throughout construction and we thank them for their willingness to work with us. Library patrons are encouraged to call our hotline at 888-800-8854 if they have questions. Traffic Impacts: Traffic on 2700 West between 3100 South and 3500 South is operational on the west side of the road. Please be mindful of construction crews and obey posted speed limits.

Reach 2

Reach Description: Reach 2 is the area along 3100 South from Constitution Boulevard to Decker Lake Drive. The E Center and a few other businesses are located in this reach, as well as residents on either side of 3100 South. Access will be maintained throughout construction and we will coordinate with the E Center to accommodate the great events they have to offer. When TRAX is completed along 3100 South, it will operate on the south side of the roadway. Current Construction: Maple Way at 3100 South is now open and the rails have been placed in the roadway. Currently, traffic signal foundations are being installed. The girders have also been placed on the TRAX bridge over I-215 on the south side of 3100 South and significant progress is being made near the E Center. Upcoming Construction: Night work is currently taking place on the TRAX bridge over I-215. Noise impacts are anticipated to be minimal. Traffic Impacts: Currently there are lane restrictions on 3100 South; however, access is being maintained.

Reach 3

Reach Description: Reach 3 is the area along Decker Lake Drive from 3100 South to Research Way (2770 South) and running east to Redwood Road. This area includes many commercial office buildings with thousands of employees who access this area on a daily basis. We will continually work with businesses to ensure access is maintained. Current Construction: The west side of Decker Lake Drive is open and access is being maintained. Crews have started work on the storm drain on the east side of the road. Upcoming Construction: Preliminary utility work has begun on Research Way near Redwood Road. We would like to thank businesses in this area and encourage them to call the hotline if issues arise. Traffic Impacts: Access to businesses is being maintained.

Reach 4

Reach Description: Reach 4 runs through the Chesterfield residential area along 2770 South and proceeds along the Decker Lake Canal and the Crosstowne Trail. We will work with residents to ensure a safe working environment that provides access to their properties throughout construction. Current Construction: Crews have installed a permanent wall along both sides of the Crosstowne Trail in Chesterfield. Crews have also improved drainage and irrigation and have accomplished significant foundation work for TRAX’s overhead wiring system. We would like to thank the residents for their patience during construction. Upcoming Construction: Temporary fencing is scheduled to be taken down along the Crosstowne Trail next week. Permanent fences will also be tied into the sound wall structure at the same time. Traffic Impacts: The Crosstowne Trail along 2770 South just east of Redwood Road to the Brighton Canal is currently closed. Once TRAX construction is completed, the trail will open again.

Reach 5

Reach Description: Reach 5 will include construction along 1070 West in the Chesterfield industrial area. This reach will include one bridge structure over the Jordan River and another over 900 West. Current Construction: Currently there are lane restrictions along 1070 West as crews finish utility work and install retaining walls. Access is being maintained and we appreciate the businesses’ patience. Upcoming Construction: After utility work is complete, crews will begin working on the roadway on the west side of 1070 West which should last until the end of the summer season. Crews will then begin work on the east side of the roadway. Traffic Impacts: As construction proceeds, there will be lane restrictions, although access will be maintained.

Reach 6

Reach Description: Reach 6 runs through the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard area. Although there are no businesses and residents, extensive coordination will take place with the Union Pacific Railroad to ensure that freight deliveries and other train travel is maintained. Reach 6 includes plans for an extensive bridging system that will enable TRAX to operate over other train traffic. Current Construction: Significant progress continues on the TRAX bridge structure over the Roper Yard area near 2200 South and 600 West. Construction is also proceeding just east of 900 West along the south side of SR 201. Upcoming Construction: Coordination will continue with the Union Pacific Railroad to install utilities and bridge structures. Traffic Impacts: Not applicable. This is a Union Pacific Railroad work area.

Reach 7

Reach Description: Reach 7 is the area where the West Valley Line will connect with the current north/south TRAX Line. Construction will take place along Andy Avenue in South Salt Lake. West Valley TRAX Update

Welcome!



Construction progress continues on the West Valley TRAX Line. To keep business and traffic impacts to a minimum, this five-mile project has been separated into seven construction “reaches,” or segments, for management and planning purposes. The map below shows each construction reach in a different color, starting with Reach 1 in light green on the south end of the project and ending with Reach 7 in dark green on the north end.



Currently, construction is taking place in all reaches.

Reach 1



Reach Description: Reach 1 is the area along Constitution Boulevard (2700 South) from West Valley City Hall at 3600 South extending north to 3100 South. This area includes both large and small businesses, as well as many residents. Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.



Current Construction: TRAX construction is taking place in conjunction with UTA’s bus rapid transit project on Market Street. Crews are currently working on the station platform in between West Valley City Hall and the Public Safety Building. Work is also taking place on Market Street as crews pour curbs and prepare the roadway. Pedestrians wishing to access the Public Safety Building and West Valley City Justice Courts are required to go through the West Valley City Hall main lobby.



Crews continue to progress on the storm drain along the east side of Constitution Boulevard as they make their way south of 3500 South near Valley Fair Mall. This work is anticipated to continue for the next couple of weeks. Access will be maintained throughout this work.



Upcoming Construction: Work is scheduled to take place in the intersection at 3500 South and Constitution Boulevard on April 24th at 9:00 p.m. to April 27th at 5:00 a.m. West and east bound traffic will be prohibited at this intersection although all other movements will be maintained. We will visit personally with businesses in this area to talk about this work and more details will be provided in next week’s construction update.



Traffic Impacts: Traffic on 2700 West between 3100 South and 3500 South is operational on the west side of the road. Please be mindful of construction crews and obey posted speed limits.



Reach 2



Reach Description: Reach 2 is the area along 3100 South from Constitution Boulevard to Decker Lake Drive. The E Center and a few other businesses are located in this reach, as well as residents on either side of 3100 South. Access will be maintained throughout construction and we will work with the E Center to coordinate our efforts so you can continue to visit the great events they have to offer. When TRAX is completed along 3100 South, it will operate on the south side of the roadway.



Current Construction: Progress has been made on the TRAX bridge over
I-215 on the south side of 3100 South. Crews are also installing traffic signal foundations in this area.



Upcoming Construction: Bridge girders will be installed over I-215 at 3100 South from May 1st – May 4th. To minimize impacts, this work is being coordinated with other UDOT projects and limited access will be maintained on I-215 throughout the weekend work period.



Traffic Impacts: Traffic impacts along 3100 South are minor at this time as the majority of work is taking place on the side of the roadway.



Reach 3



Reach Description: Reach 3 is the area along Decker Lake Drive from 3100 South to Research Way (2770 South) and running east to Redwood Road. This area includes many commercial office buildings with thousands of employees who access this area on a daily basis. We will continually work with businesses to ensure access is maintained.



Current Construction: The west side of Decker Lake Drive is open and access is being maintained. Crews have started work on the storm drain on the east side of the road.

Reach Description: Reach 4 runs through the Chesterfield residential area along 2770 South and proceeds along the Decker Lake Canal and the Crosstowne Trail. We will work with residents to ensure a safe working environment that provides access to their properties throughout construction.



Current Construction: Crews have installed a permanent wall along both sides of the Crosstowne Trail in Chesterfield. Significant drainage and irrigation work has also been accomplished, along with foundation work for TRAX’s overhead wiring system. We would like to thank the residents for their patience during construction.



Upcoming Construction: As more information becomes available, we will work with Chesterfield residents regarding temporary fencing in this area.



Traffic Impacts:

· The Crosstowne Trail along 2770 South just east of Redwood Road
to the Brighton Canal is currently closed. Once TRAX construction is completed, the trail will open again.











Reach 5



Reach Description: Reach 5 will include construction along 1070 West in the Chesterfield industrial area. This reach will include one bridge structure over the Jordan River and another over 900 West.



Current Construction: The majority of construction is taking place on
1070 West just north of Parkway Avenue. Currently there are lane restrictions in this area as crews relocate utilities in this area.
Utility work is anticipated to be complete by the end of summer and then roadwork will begin. Access is being maintained and we appreciate the businesses’ patience as work takes place along 1070 West.



Upcoming Construction: Construction is anticipated to take place for the next several months.



Traffic Impacts: As construction proceeds, there will be lane restrictions, although access will be maintained.







Reach 6



Reach Description: Reach 6 runs through the Union Pacific Railroad’s Roper Yard area. Although there are no businesses and residents, extensive coordination will take place with the Union Pacific Railroad to ensure that freight deliveries and other train travel is maintained.
Reach 6 includes plans for an extensive bridging system that will enable TRAX to operate over other train traffic.



Current Construction: Progress has been made on the overhead structure in roper yard. Crews have installed steel piles 120’ into the ground to form the main foundations for the aerial bridge that will carry TRAX over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Crews are now installing geofoam to form the basis of the bridge structure over the Roper Yard area.



Construction is also proceeding just east of 900 West along the south side of SR 201.



Upcoming Construction: Coordination will continue with the Union Pacific Railroad to install utilities and bridge structures.



Traffic Impacts: Not applicable. This is a Union Pacific Railroad work area.












Reach 7



Reach Description: Reach 7 is the area where the West Valley Line will connect with the current North/South TRAX Line. Construction will take place along Andy Avenue in South Salt Lake. Crews will closely coordinate activities with businesses to ensure access is maintained.
