Business Spotlight

Home of “Killer Mexican Food”
Brings North Temple to Life
It goes without saying, if
you’re looking for great Mexican
food in Salt Lake City, you go to
the Red Iguana. After 40 years
of successful business, being
recognized as Utah’s most
awarded Mexican Restaurant with more than 38 national and local
awards, even City Weekly asks, “Can anyone remember a year
when Red Iguana didn’t win the Best of Utah award for Best
Mexican?”

What may not have been mentioned is that despite the
ongoing lunch-time lines of customers that circle the building at
736 West and continuing rave reviews, Red Iguana is feeling the
pinch of TRAX construction along North Temple. Owners of the famous eatery,
however, are taking the bull by the horn, voicing their optimism for a better
community and taking an active role in ensuring that none of the businesses
along North Temple are forgotten.

“We are a part of this community,” said owner Bill Coker, proudly
displaying the community-developed button that reads, “Shop North Temple, I
Do.” And he’s a man of his word. Coker and his wife Lucy Cardenas, daughter of the original owners,
have been instrumental in the distribution of these buttons. Coker also participates in a local
community advisory committee, which works to bring North Temple businesses together to discuss
construction and strategies to mitigate its impact on the local economy. “I have a business to run,” he
says, although he still invests his valuable time in helping plan a marketing campaign for businesses
affected by the reconstruction of the North Temple viaduct.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Gerry Carpenter, 801-859-6095

Date: April 14, 2010 Press Release

North Temple Viaduct Closes Sunday
For 18-Month Rebuild

Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City will close a segment of North Temple Street starting this Sunday for an 18-month rebuild of the North Temple viaduct. The viaduct, which crosses Union Pacific and UTA railroad tracks between 600 West and 300 West, will be demolished and rebuilt as part of the Airport TRAX light rail project.

The closure will begin at approximately 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 18, and last for about 18 months.

Traffic entering or leaving downtown Salt Lake City will be detoured for the duration of the construction. To avoid potential delays at railroad crossings, UTA recommends using 400 South or 600 North.

“Our goal is to complete the viaduct reconstruction as quickly and safely as possible,” Matt Sibul, UTA project manager said. “We will do our best to minimize impacts to the neighborhood and maintain access to North Temple businesses during construction.”

Questions from the public regarding this closure should be directed to the project construction hotline at 1-888-800-8854.

Once complete, the new North Temple viaduct will be a shorter structure that includes roadway improvements, pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, security lighting, and a passenger transfer station from TRAX to FrontRunner. The Airport TRAX line is a 6-mile light rail extension that will connect with the existing TRAX system at Arena Station. It will run west along North Temple to the Salt Lake International Airport, conveniently stopping adjacent to Terminal One.

More information about the Airport TRAX project is available at www.rideuta.com.

###

Established in 1970, UTA has become a multi-modal transportation leader that is 100 percent accessible with 69 light rail vehicles, 35 commuter rail cars and more than 600 buses. UTA’s TRAX light rail system is currently averaging more than 40,000 riders a day along its 15-mile Salt Lake-Sandy line and the 4-mile University Line. UTA is an ISO 14001:2004 9001:2000 certified agency. During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, UTA’s transit system was declared a great success on the international scene - carrying more than four million Olympic riders.
