UTA Mid-Jordan TRAX Line Weekly Construction Update: September 24, 2010

* Traffic on 7800 South in West Jordan will be subject to lane shifts continuing through early October.

* Please use caution when approaching railroad crossings throughout the project area. Crews and equipment travel on the rails frequently.


The Mid-Jordan TRAX line is a 10.6 mile light rail line that will connect the communities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan with the existing Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX line.

It runs from the existing TRAX line at 6400 South to approximately 7400 South, then turns west along the Bingham Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. At 5600 West, the line turns south again and ends at the southern end of the Daybreak development. For construction purposes, the line has been segmented into five sections.

Daybreak Area

(This segment runs north through the Daybreak development to Old Bingham Highway at approximately 5600 West)



New vehicle testing is ongoing in Daybreak. Crews continue installing canopy components including bench brackets and side slats. Crews will also be cleaning up at the 5600 West park & ride.

Old Bingham Area

(This segment runs parallel to the existing Union Pacific Railroad Bingham Branch line,

along the Old Bingham Highway from approximately 5600 West to the Bangerter Station, east of Bangerter Highway)

Miscellaneous track work continues in this segment. Crews will be striping the 4800 West park & ride.

Sugar Factory Area

(This segment continues northeast along the UPRR Bingham Branch from approximately Bangerter
Highway to Gardner Village)

Work moves forward for the entrance to the West Jordan City Center park & ride. Light pole foundations are being poured. Track and overhead catenary system (OCS) work continues in this segment.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Canopies are scheduled to be erected at the Bingham Junction station, and ADA ramps are scheduled to be poured as well. Landscaping continues at the Historic Gardner park & ride.



ACTIVITY: Bridge repairs at 7800 South

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 7800 South will have lane shifts in place through early October.

Cottonwood Area

(This segment extends north from 700 West along the existing light rail alignment to its terminus at the 6400 South-

Fashion Place Station)

Grading crews continue working at the Fashion Place park & ride, and curb, gutter and sidewalks are being constructed. The canopies are scheduled to be painted, and the dirt parking lot south of the Y tracks is scheduled for grading prior to being paved in early October. OCS and electrical work continues.

Highway to Gardner Village)

Work at the 3200 West crossing will be completed next week. Crews will be installing and regulating overhead catenary system (OCS) wire from Redwood Road to Gardner Village.



* ACTIVITY: Installation of storm drain, new asphalt, curb, gutter and concrete medians at 3200 West

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 3200 West will be closed at the intersection with 8600 West through September 17.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Landscaping work is going on at Gardner Village. The station canopies at Gardner Village will be painted, and fiber optic cable is being installed.

Crews continue installing drainage and finishing the concrete channel along Old Bingham Highway. Crews will begin removing weeds from the sound berm, and the signals at 5200 West and 4000 West are scheduled for activation this week.

Highway to Gardner Village)

Grading work continues at the Redwood park & ride, and curbs and gutters are scheduled for pouring this week. Crews are also scheduled to paint the canopy at the Redwood station platform. Landscaping continues at the 2700 West park & ride. Crews continue to string overhead catenary system (OCS) wire from Redwood road to Gardner Village.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Work on the 7800 South bridge moves forward as construction crews paint the new bridge and conduct repairs on the old one. The Gardner Village park & ride is scheduled to be paved this week, and the concrete for the station platform will be poured.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Crews are scheduled to begin forming and pouring concrete for the Gardner Village platform. Track work in this section is ongoing as crews lay new track across the Jordan River and 7800 South bridges. Work continues to prepare the Gardner Village Park & Ride lot for paving in early August. The 1300 West grade crossing work should be completed today, and the road will reopen Saturday morning, July 31.

* Cottonwood Street will be closed to through traffic between Winchester Street and the I-215 bridge from Thursday, July 15 through Sunday, July 18. Business access will be maintained during the closure.

* Night work near Winchester Street will take place Friday night, July 9, and Saturday night, July 10 between 12 am and 8 am.

* The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed between 7800 South and the Jordan River through Tuesday, July 20 for additional embankment work and fence installation.

* Please use caution when approaching railroad crossings throughout the project area. Crews and equipment travel on the rails frequently.



The Mid-Jordan TRAX line is a 10.6 mile light rail line that will connect the communities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan with the existing Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX line. It runs from the existing TRAX line at 6400 South to approximately 7400 South, then turns west along the Bingham Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad.

At 5600 West, the line turns south again and ends at the southern end of the Daybreak development. For construction purposes, the line has been segmented into five sections. The map below shows each section in a different color, beginning with Daybreak on the southwest end and ending with Cottonwood at the northeast end.

Daybreak Area

New TRAX cars debut

While I have not had the opportunity to ride these cars yet (San Diego and Portland use them), I have heard good things about these from people in the Portland area. The down falls of low floor buses don't seem to apply to low floor rail vehicles. Sadly I will not be able to make this debut on Friday.

Jordan River Parkway Closure
In Midvale for TRAX Construction





A section of the Jordan River Parkway trail near Gardner Village will close for two weeks beginning Tuesday, June 8, to accommodate TRAX construction in the area. The trail will reopen on June 23.



The closure will extend from 7800 South to approximately 7400 South in Midvale. There will be no trail detour for the duration of the work. The closure will allow construction crews to bring in fill material and widen the railroad embankment for the future Mid-Jordan TRAX line. This is the final trail closure related to this project.

Construction of the Redwood Road rail crossing is in progress. Concrete work is moving forward at the Bangerter and 2700 West station platforms, and foundations for OCS poles are being installed. Crews are also installing ballast and laying rail throughout this segment.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Redwood Road will be closed from approximately 8020 South to 8150 South beginning Saturday night, June 5, at 10 pm. Redwood Road will reopen at 2 pm on Sunday, June 6.





* NEW ACTIVITY: Construction of the east half of the Redwood Road rail crossing.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: From 7 pm Friday, June 4 through 5 am Monday, June 7, all traffic on Redwood Road will be shifted to the west side of the street (the three northbound lanes) between 7600 South and 8600 South.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed between Tuesday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 22 as crews begin widening the embankment of the rail right-of-way between 7800 South and the Jordan River. Embankment work is in progress between 1300 South and 7800 South. Work continues at the Jordan River bridge and the 700 West bridge, and at the Gardner Village Park & Ride.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from 7800 South to the Jordan River from Tuesday, June 8 through Tuesday, June 22.


Cottonwood Area

(This segment extends north from 700 West along the existing light rail alignment to its terminus at the 6400 South-

Fashion Place Station)

Track work, including switches, derails and signals, is moving forward on both sides of Cottonwood Street as crews work towards connecting the Mid-Jordan line with the Sandy-Salt Lake line. Lovendahl Yard track work continues as switches, pre-curved rail and other special track is installed.

UTA Mid-Jordan TRAX Line Weekly Construction Update: May 28, 2010



* Redwood Road will be closed at the railroad crossing at approximately 8050 South in West Jordan from 10 pm Saturday, June 5 through 2 pm Sunday, June 6. Please use an alternate route.

*Winchester Street will be closed between the TRAX crossing and 300 West (Cottonwood Street) from May 24 through June 1. It will reopen Wednesday morning, June 2 at 5 am.

* The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from 7800 South north to the UTA Jordan River bridge for approximately two weeks, from June 3 through June 18.

* Please use caution when approaching railroad crossings throughout the project area. Crews and equipment travel on the rails frequently.



Winchester Street Businesses Open During Construction

Although Winchester Street will be closed from May 24 through June 1, business access will still be maintained, and UTA encourages residents to continue to shop at businesses located on Winchester. West of the construction area, customers can access businesses via Winchester Street or 300 West (Cottonwood Street). East of the construction area, customers can access businesses using Winchester Street – the street is only closed at the TRAX crossing. The following Winchester Street businesses are still open during construction:

The Mid-Jordan TRAX line is a 10.6 mile light rail line that will connect the communities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan with the existing Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX line. It runs from the existing TRAX line at 6400 South to approximately 7400 South, then turns west along the Bingham Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. At 5600 West, the line turns south again and ends at the southern end of the Daybreak development. For construction purposes, the line has been segmented into five sections. The map below shows each section in a different color, beginning with Daybreak on the southwest end and ending with Cottonwood at the northeast end.

Daybreak Area

(This segment runs north through the Daybreak development to Old Bingham Highway at approximately 5600 West)



Work continues on the landscaping at the 5600 West station and Park & Ride. Crews are installing concrete bench foundations and sidewalks at the station platforms.

Old Bingham Area

(This segment runs parallel to the existing Union Pacific Railroad Bingham Branch line,

along the Old Bingham Highway from approximately 5600 West to the Bangerter Station, east of Bangerter Highway)

Track and grading/drainage work is moving forward in Old Bingham. OCS installation is essentially complete, and the station platform concrete work continues. The bus loop at the 4800 West station on Old Bingham Highway is nearly complete.

Crews will reconstruct the existing northbound TRAX crossing as well as construct a new crossing for the Mid-Jordan line. The excavation for the new Fashion Place station platform should be complete next week. Track work, including switches, derails and signals, is progressing. Work is also moving forward in the Lovendahl Yard.

* Redwood Road between 7800 South and 9000 South will be subject to ongoing lane closures through late May. The full closure of Redwood Road has been postponed to later in June due to inclement weather this weekend.

*Winchester Street will be closed between the TRAX crossing and 300 West (Cottonwood Street) from May 24 through June 1.

* The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from 7800 South north to the UTA Jordan River bridge for approximately two weeks, from June 3 through June 18.

Winchester Street Businesses Open During Construction
