Front Runner Construction Update

Construction is progressing on UTA’s FrontRunner South Provo to Salt Lake Commuter Rail line.

Below is the FrontRunner South construction update April 10 – 16. Please visit UTA’s FrontRunner South Webpage to learn more about the project.

Area 16 — Downtown Salt Lake City to 4500 South (Murray)



Construction Activity:

Crews will install shoring for the 3300 South bridge’s north abutment.



Traffic Impacts:

There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area. Please note that Central Avenue has reopened until crews resume work on the bridge walls.



Salt Lake Central Station:

Station complete.



Area 15 — 4500 South (Murray) to Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale)



Construction Activity:

Crews will begin 5300 South bridge abutment construction this week. Crews will also continue weekend drilled shaft work for the bridge from Friday, April 16 to Monday, April 18.



At the I-215 westbound bridge, crews will construct a cheek wall and crash cushion and replace a concrete barrier on the freeway. At the 7200 South bridge, crews will work on the bridge’s south abutment and abutment wall.



Traffic Impacts:

5300 South will be closed between 300 West and 380 West from Friday, April 9 at 10:00 p.m. through Monday, April 12 at 6:00 a.m. so crews can work on a drilled shaft.



Murray Station:

Sub-grade prep work at the Murray Station site will continue this week, and footing construction will begin at the station site.



Area 14 — Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale) to 14600 South (Bluffdale)



Construction Activity:

Considerable progress has been made on the flyover structure west of Salt Lake Community College’s Miller Campus at 9800 South. The 642-foot flyover structure features a 40-foot-high bridge deck that will allow FrontRunner to travel from the east to the west side of Union Pacific Railroad’s trackway. The flyover structure’s fills consist of keystone block MSE walls filled entirely with lightweight fill to minimize settlement. Work on the structure’s north walls will continue this week.



Crews will install temporary fencing and clear and grub the corridor between 9000 South and 9400 South and continue storm drain relocation near 9400 South. Clearing and grubbing work will continue between 11400 South and 12300 South, and crews will also remove existing fencing in the area. Crews will install a waterproofing membrane at the box culvert at Corner Canyon Creek. At the Bangerter Highway bridge, crews will form and pour concrete for the bridge’s north abutment and install shoring for the bridge’s south abutment.



Traffic Impacts:

There will be truck traffic with flaggers all week at 9400 South.



There will be truck traffic with flaggers all week at 10000 South.



At Bangerter Highway, two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane will be closed Monday through Wednesday.



There will be truck traffic with flaggers all week at 14400 South.



South Jordan Station:

There are no construction activities to report; however, lightweight fill for the flyover bridge construction is currently stored at the future South Jordan Park and Ride site.



Draper Future Station:

Crews will finish the station platform’s east stem wall.



Area 13 — 14600 South (Bluffdale) to Thanksgiving Point (Lehi)



Construction Activity:

Sub-grade prep and sub-ballast placement will begin in the Jordan Narrows near the Utah/Salt Lake County line. Work on handrail, deck plates and shear keys will take place at the Jordan River bridge. Crews will install well house stairs at the South Jordan Canal multiplate structure.



Traffic Impacts:

There will be no impacts to motorists in Area 13 during the upcoming week.



Area 12 — Thanksgiving Point (Lehi) to Main Street (American Fork)



Construction Activity:

At 2100 North in Lehi, crews are constructing a bridge that will allow FrontRunner to travel over UDOT’s future Mountain View Corridor, 2100 North roadway. The 2100 North bridge will feature north and south abutments and five center piers. The piers are numbered 1 through 5, starting at the southern section of the bridge. This week crews will install sheet pile shoring at Pier 6 and fascia at Pier 5.



At 2300 West in Lehi, crews are constructing a bridge that will allow FrontRunner to travel over Lehi City’s future 2300 West project. This week, crews will install H-pile for the 2300 West bridge’s Pier 2.



Also in Lehi, crews will restore landscaping, sidewalk and curb and gutter along the west side of Garden Drive and continue construction on one of the retaining walls in the Cranberry Farms neighborhood.



Traffic Impacts:

At Garden Drive in Lehi, there will be a single lane closure with flaggers all week while crews restore landscaping.



Lehi Station:

A portion of the Lehi Station Park and Ride Lot is now open for public use. There are no construction activities to report at the station site.



Area 11 — Main Street (American Fork) to University Parkway (Orem)



Construction Activity:

Wet utility work will take place between Main Street and 200 South in American Fork. Track work will take place between Storrs Avenue and 200 South in American Fork and from 6400 North to 5200 North in Vineyard. Grade crossing improvements – including installing concrete medians, striping and signs – will take place at 1600 North in Vineyard. Crossing panels and other improvements will be installed at the railroad tracks that cross Geneva Road in Orem. Additionally, trackway embankment work will take place from Geneva Road to 400 South.



Traffic Impacts:

At 200 South in American Fork, there will be a single lane closure with flaggers Thursday and Friday while crews install curb and gutter for the American Fork Park and Ride Lot.



At 1600 North in Vineyard, there will be a single lane closure with flaggers Tuesday and Wednesday while crews install center medians and at-grade crossing improvements.



At 400 North in Vineyard, there will be truck traffic with flaggers Monday through Thursday.



At Geneva Road in Orem (just north of 400 South), there will be truck traffic with flaggers Monday through Thursday.



Geneva Road will be closed at the railroad tracks from Saturday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m. through Monday, April 12, at 5:00 a.m. to allow crews to make at-grade crossing improvements.



American Fork Station:

Crews will continue paving and curb and gutter installation at the Park and Ride Lot.



Vineyard Future Station:

There are no construction activities to report.



Orem Station:

Crews will begin electrical conduit layout at the Orem Station.



Area 10 — University Parkway (Orem) to Center Street (Provo)



Construction Activity:

Significant progress has been made in Area 10 along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor between University Parkway in Orem and Freedom Boulevard in Provo. Crews have prepared a path for FrontRunner by grading and clearing the right-of-way and relocating water lines. Drainage and irrigation installations are generally complete in this area, and main line earthwork has been finalized from University Parkway to 2000 South in Orem and from the Provo River bridge to 500 West in Provo. At-grade crossing improvements have also been completed at 900 West, 700 West, 500 West and Freedom Boulevard.



Crews will continue installation of soil nails and shotcrete at the wall near University Parkway in Orem. Signal house work will take place near the 2800 West and 1680 North. Track work will take place between 1680 North and 820 North in Provo. Also in Provo, crews will finish crossing work started last fall at the 900 West, 700 West, 500 West and Freedom Boulevard crossings. Work taking place at these crossings will include sign installation, road striping, median work and asphalt patching. At-grade crossing improvements at 820 North will begin this week. Crews will conduct stabilization and sub-grade prep work between 700 West and Freedom Boulevard. Duct bank work and signal work will take place between 600 West and University Avenue.



Traffic Impacts:

At 820 North in Provo, there will be a single lane closure with flaggers Monday and Tuesday to accommodate truck traffic.



There will be truck traffic with flaggers at Freedom Boulevard and 500 West in Provo Tuesday through Thursday.



Provo Station:

Electrical conduit work will continue at the station site this week.
