Chamber in Davis to celebrate Legacy start

deseretnews.com | Chamber in Davis to celebrate Legacy start: "Chamber in Davis to celebrate Legacy start
FARMINGTON — The Davis Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the official start of Legacy Parkway construction Thursday with the Utah Department of Transportation, the Governor's Office and other governmental leaders.
While fighting for the Legacy Parkway, the Davis Chamber created 'Utahns for Legacy Parkway,' which lobbied for building the critical highway. Many sported stickers that read, 'Build Legacy Now!' The group has provided even more stickers that simply say, 'Building Legacy Now!' Through its fund-raising efforts, the group will use funds to supply refreshments at the celebration.
The Davis Chamber of Commerce encourages county commuters to join UDOT at an open house to view the proposed parkway and ask questions. The group will be available from 4—8 on Thursday, at the Davis County Fairpark in Farmington, Exposition Building 2.
Davis Cable Channel 17 will be on hand to cover the event in its entirety from the governor's comments to the official commencement ceremony and stakeholders' comments. It also can be accessed on www.daviscable17.com at a later date. "

Get used to the idea of a toll

deseretnews.com | Get used to the idea of a toll: "Get used to the idea of a toll
Deseret Morning News editorial
Ask people in Midwestern and Eastern states how they feel about toll roads, and chances are many of them would say they gladly would return to a free system out of convenience.
But then, of course, there is no such thing as a free system. Utahns pay for their highways. They just don't have to carry wads of loose change with them to do so. And that leads us to the subject, again, of toll roads.
SB80, a bill that soon may be on Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.'s desk, would allow Utah to enter into partnerships with private businesses to fund new, much-needed highways. In return, the private businesses could begin charging and collecting tolls for the use of those roads. Some people are saying the bill is specifically written with the thought in mind of building a toll road along the Mountain View Corridor in the western end of Salt Lake County, but state officials say they have yet to make such a decision."

Salt Lake Tribune - Utah: "Plan to eliminate rail line receives backing in House
By Heather May
The Salt Lake Tribune

A bill that would lay the groundwork for eliminating freight trains from Salt Lake City's 900 South passed a House committee Monday.
HB372 would let Salt Lake County shift $3.5 million of transit taxes from highways to a $50 million pot to realign Union Pacific railroad's Grant Tower - a curve near The Gateway. That fix, in turn, would lead UP to abandon its line on 900 South, where trains travel within 40 feet of some homes, rattling foundations and, say unhappy residents, ruining property values. "

Changes may mean less money for U.S. 6, more for other projects
By Nicole Warburton
Deseret Morning News
A bill that would have meant a billion-dollar makeover for U.S. 6 was amended Tuesday, making it less likely that the deadly rural road will receive full funding for fixes this year.
The changes to HB369, however, may mean more money for other road projects in the state — including reconstruction of I-15 in Utah County."

ST. GEORGE — Hundreds of people showed up in St. George on Tuesday to review plans for more than a dozen transportation projects idling just over the horizon in Utah's fastest growing county.
'We wanted to not only help people understand what's happening, but to let them know what the timelines are for some of these projects,' said Myron Lee, the public involvement coordinator for the Utah Department of Transportation Region Four. 'Normally, if we get 30 or so people to an open house, we're happy. So we were extremely pleased with the turnout at this event.'"

Monorail rating, ridership go down

reviewjournal.com -- News - Monorail rating, ridership go down

Anti-transit types along with Monorailist have been pushing the notion that if you built monorails instead of light rail they would make money.

The monorailist believe that monorails are better than light rail because they are elevated and sleek.

The anti-transit types just want to stop light rail lines so they "use" the monorailsit to help their cause.

My Proposed Restructuring of UTA Routes - Route 7

Here is my continuing series on my proposal to restructure Utah Transit Authority bus service.

Note: 6 is left open for future bus expansion

Route 7:

Route 8 is renumbered route 7.

Service Frequency: Monday Through Saturday: 30-minute service; Sunday 60-minute

Route will provide alternating every 15-minute service from 7000 South and 2000 East to the Intermodal Depot in conjunction with new route 9.

Buses: 40-foot buses-All Low Floor. Route could eventually need articulated buses with performance increases and upgrades mentioned below.

This route should be part of an enhanced route service similar to the program that Portland is doing with assigning only Low Floor Buses to a route, working on maximizing scheduling, closing some stops, improving speeds, and adjust bus stops in order to make loading and unloading faster. From here on I will mention that the route should be part of the route enhancement program.

deseretnews.com | Legacy Parkway hits new pothole — a delay in dissolving injunction: "Legacy Parkway hits new pothole — a delay in dissolving injunction
By Nicole Warburton
Deseret Morning News
The Legacy Parkway is stuck in court once again.
After a 75-minute court hearing Thursday, U.S. District Judge Bruce Jenkins denied a motion by the state to lift the injunction placed on Legacy in 2001 by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Denver.
Jenkins said Thursday that he had no power to dissolve the injunction, despite arguments from the state that authority to do so had been remanded back to his jurisdiction. His decision means a March 2 groundbreaking for Legacy could be postponed as the state will now need to approach the Court of Appeals to lift the injunction."
