Mid Jordan TRAX Construction Update

UTA Mid-Jordan TRAX Line Weekly Construction Update: March 12, 2010



*UPDATE: The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from March 29 through April 5.

*REMINDER: Please use caution when approaching railroad crossings throughout the project area. Crews and equipment travel on the rails frequently.



The Mid-Jordan TRAX line is a 10.6 mile light rail line that will connect the communities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan with the existing Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX line. It runs from the existing TRAX line at 6400 South to approximately 7400 South, then turns west along the Bingham Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. At 5600 West, the line turns south again and ends at the southern end of the Daybreak development. For construction purposes, the line has been segmented into five sections. The map below shows each section in a different color, beginning with Daybreak on the southwest end and ending with Cottonwood at the northeast end.

Daybreak Area

(This segment runs north through the Daybreak development to Old Bingham Highway at approximately 5600 West)



Installation of station canopies continues at the two Daybreak stations. Crews continue installing light poles, curbing and sidewalks at the 5600 West park & ride lot, and signal and electrical testing continues.


Old Bingham Area

(This segment runs parallel to the existing Union Pacific Railroad Bingham Branch line,

along the Old Bingham Highway from approximately 5600 West to the Bangerter Station, east of Bangerter Highway)

Concrete work continues at the 4800 West station platform. Crews are moving forward with the installation of overhead catenary system (OCS) poles and wire, as well as drainage work. Track work is nearing completion in this segment.



*NEW ACTIVITY: OCS pole installation at 9000 S.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Lane closures at 9000 S. and the railroad crossing between 9 am and 3 pm on Wednesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 25.



*NEW ACTIVITY: Permanent handrail installation at Bangerter bridge.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Bangerter Highway will be subject to overnight lane closures Friday, March 26 to Saturday, March 27.


Sugar Factory Area

(This segment continues northeast along the UPRR Bingham Branch from approximately Bangerter
Highway to Gardner Village)

Track and signal work continues along this segment. Installation of OCS poles is moving forward. Grading will take place at the 2700 West park & ride, and construction continues on the sound wall between 2700 West and 2200 West. Prior to the crossing construction at Redwood Road, crews will install a new storm drain under the west side of the road this weekend.



* NEW ACTIVITY: Storm drain installation at the Redwood Road grade crossing.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The two outer southbound lanes (on the west side of the street) will be closed Saturday, March 20 through Sunday, March 21 and again Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29.



ACTIVITY: Sound wall construction continues between 2700 W and 2200 W.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Sugar Factory Road will be reduced to one lane intermittently between 2700 W and 2200 W. Flaggers will be present.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Pile driving at the new Jordan River Bridge will be complete this week. Cyclists and pedestrians using the Jordan Valley Parkway Trail should be aware that the trail will be closed from March 29-April 12 due to work between the Jordan River bridge and 7800 South. Grading and storm drain installation continues at the Gardner Village Park and Ride lot.



*NEW ACTIVITY: Water line installation near Gardner Village.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Lane closures on 7800 South at Gardner Village will take place from Sunday, March 21 to Wednesday, March 24.



*NEW ACTIVITY: Jordan River Parkway trail reconstruction.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The Jordan River Parkway trail will be closed between 7800 South and the Jordan River railroad bridge from Monday, March 29 to Monday, April 12.


Cottonwood Area

(This segment extends north from 700 West along the existing light rail alignment to its terminus at the 6400 South-

Fashion Place Station)

Grading work began this week and will continue through April as crews prepare to build the new track connecting the Mid-Jordan line to the existing Sandy-Salt Lake TRAX line. Drainage and track work continues.



*NEW ACTIVITY: Installation of a new water line near the Fashion Place Park and Ride.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Winchester Street will be closed at the TRAX crossing from Monday, April 5 through Friday, April 9. Motorists are asked to use 7200 S as an alternate.

Access during Construction

UTA is committed to maintaining 24-hour access to all of the businesses and residences along the construction corridor. We will coordinate with businesses in cases where access may be temporarily limited.



Construction Hours

Construction is permitted to take place between 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday. Additionally, specific activities may require different working hours depending upon conditions and will be coordinated with city officials.
