UTA Mid-Jordan TRAX Line Weekly Construction Update: September 24, 2010

* Traffic on 7800 South in West Jordan will be subject to lane shifts continuing through early October.

* Please use caution when approaching railroad crossings throughout the project area. Crews and equipment travel on the rails frequently.


The Mid-Jordan TRAX line is a 10.6 mile light rail line that will connect the communities of Murray, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan with the existing Sandy/Salt Lake TRAX line.

It runs from the existing TRAX line at 6400 South to approximately 7400 South, then turns west along the Bingham Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. At 5600 West, the line turns south again and ends at the southern end of the Daybreak development. For construction purposes, the line has been segmented into five sections.

Daybreak Area

(This segment runs north through the Daybreak development to Old Bingham Highway at approximately 5600 West)



New vehicle testing is ongoing in Daybreak. Crews continue installing canopy components including bench brackets and side slats. Crews will also be cleaning up at the 5600 West park & ride.

Old Bingham Area

(This segment runs parallel to the existing Union Pacific Railroad Bingham Branch line,

along the Old Bingham Highway from approximately 5600 West to the Bangerter Station, east of Bangerter Highway)

Miscellaneous track work continues in this segment. Crews will be striping the 4800 West park & ride.

Sugar Factory Area

(This segment continues northeast along the UPRR Bingham Branch from approximately Bangerter
Highway to Gardner Village)

Work moves forward for the entrance to the West Jordan City Center park & ride. Light pole foundations are being poured. Track and overhead catenary system (OCS) work continues in this segment.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Canopies are scheduled to be erected at the Bingham Junction station, and ADA ramps are scheduled to be poured as well. Landscaping continues at the Historic Gardner park & ride.



ACTIVITY: Bridge repairs at 7800 South

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 7800 South will have lane shifts in place through early October.

Cottonwood Area

(This segment extends north from 700 West along the existing light rail alignment to its terminus at the 6400 South-

Fashion Place Station)

Grading crews continue working at the Fashion Place park & ride, and curb, gutter and sidewalks are being constructed. The canopies are scheduled to be painted, and the dirt parking lot south of the Y tracks is scheduled for grading prior to being paved in early October. OCS and electrical work continues.

Canopy work continues at 4800 West. Crews continue preparing the berms for hydroseeding, and signal and communications equipment is being installed.

Sugar Factory Area

Highway to Gardner Village)

Work at the 3200 West crossing will be completed next week. Crews will be installing and regulating overhead catenary system (OCS) wire from Redwood Road to Gardner Village.



* ACTIVITY: Installation of storm drain, new asphalt, curb, gutter and concrete medians at 3200 West

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 3200 West will be closed at the intersection with 8600 West through September 17.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Landscaping work is going on at Gardner Village. The station canopies at Gardner Village will be painted, and fiber optic cable is being installed.



ACTIVITY: Bridge repairs at 7800 South

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 7800 South will have lane shifts in place through mid-September.

Fashion Place Station)

Cottonwood Street and Winchester Street will be paved next week. Grading crews will be working at the Fashion Place park & ride, and concrete will be poured for the platform ramps and landings. Work continues with track and OCS in Lovendahl Yard.



* ACTIVITY: Construction of new curb and gutter, sidewalk, concrete medians and repaving of Winchester Street.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Winchester Street will be closed between Cottonwood Street and the TRAX crossing through September 17.

Crews continue installing drainage and finishing the concrete channel along Old Bingham Highway. Crews will begin removing weeds from the sound berm, and the signals at 5200 West and 4000 West are scheduled for activation this week.

Highway to Gardner Village)

Grading work continues at the Redwood park & ride, and curbs and gutters are scheduled for pouring this week. Crews are also scheduled to paint the canopy at the Redwood station platform. Landscaping continues at the 2700 West park & ride. Crews continue to string overhead catenary system (OCS) wire from Redwood road to Gardner Village.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Work on the 7800 South bridge moves forward as construction crews paint the new bridge and conduct repairs on the old one. The Gardner Village park & ride is scheduled to be paved this week, and the concrete for the station platform will be poured.

Highway to Gardner Village)

Electrical work and light pole foundation installation continues at the Redwood park & ride. The station canopy at Redwood is scheduled for installation this week. Crews continue to string overhead catenary system (OCS) wire and install balance weight assemblies.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

Crews are scheduled to begin forming and pouring concrete for the Gardner Village platform. Track work in this section is ongoing as crews lay new track across the Jordan River and 7800 South bridges. Work continues to prepare the Gardner Village Park & Ride lot for paving in early August. The 1300 West grade crossing work should be completed today, and the road will reopen Saturday morning, July 31.

* The Jordan River Parkway Trail is now open in its permanent configuration. The temporary detour over the railroad tracks south of the Jordan River bridge has been

removed.

Crews continue finishing concrete work on the 4800 West station platform. The sound berm extension on the west side of Wasatch Meadows has been rescheduled for this week. Crews will also be working to repair the drainage channel west of 4800 West.

Highway to Gardner Village)

Concrete work continues at the Bangerter and 2700 West station platforms – the canopies have been erected at Bangerter, and will soon be installed at 2700 West as well. OCS work progresses as well, as nearly all poles have been installed and wire is being hung.



* NEW ACTIVITY: Asphalt paving at the 2700 West railroad crossing.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: 2700 West will be closed at the railroad crossing from Wednesday, June 30

through Friday, July 2. Sugar Factory Road will be closed at 2700 West during this time.

Gardner Village Area

The Jordan River Parkway Trail is now open. Work has now begun to shape the embankment just south of 7800 South. Workers continue installing OCS foundations between the Jordan River and Bingham Junction station. Grading at the Gardner Village park & ride lot and concrete work at the station platform are both scheduled for this week.

UTA invites you to the unveiling of its new light rail vehicles on Friday, June 18 from 10 am to noon. The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the new 5600 West Park & Ride at 5651 West Old Bingham Highway in West Jordan. The inaugural ride on the new vehicles is scheduled for 10:30.



* Old Bingham Highway will be closed just west of 9000 South from Monday, June 14 through Thursday, June 17. Please use 4800 West as an alternate.

* 5200 West will be closed at the railroad crossing on Saturday, June 19th from 7 am to 5 pm.

* The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from 7800 South north to the UTA Jordan River bridge for approximately two weeks, from June 8 through June 22.

This week, crews will resume installation of sound wall panels along Old Bingham Highway between 4000 West and Bangerter Highway. Crews are also installing a new storm drain under Old Bingham Highway just west of 9000 South, which will require Old Bingham Highway to be closed for four days at 9000 South. Sugar Factory Area

(This segment continues northeast along the UPRR Bingham Branch from approximately Bangerter
Highway to Gardner Village)

Construction of the Redwood Road rail crossing is complete, and crews are installing concrete medians and sidewalks. Overhead catenary system (OCS) poles, arms and wire are being installed between 3200 West and 1300 West. Crews are also installing ballast and laying rail throughout this segment.

Gardner Village Area

(This segment continues along the UPRR Bingham Branch northeast from Gardner Village to 700 West)

The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed between Tuesday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 22 as crews begin widening the embankment of the rail right-of-way between 7800 South and the Jordan River. Grading work is moving forward at the Gardner Village Park & Ride, and crews will begin work to install OCS foundations between the Jordan River and Bingham Junction station.



* ACTIVITY: Embankment work between the Jordan River and 7800 South.

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The Jordan River Parkway Trail will be closed from 7800 South to the Jordan River from Tuesday, June 8 through Tuesday, June 22.

Cottonwood Area

(This segment extends north from 700 West along the existing light rail alignment to its terminus at the 6400 South-

Fashion Place Station)

Track work, including switches, derails and signals, is moving forward on both sides of Cottonwood Street as crews work towards connecting the Mid-Jordan line with the Sandy-Salt Lake line. Work is also progressing at the site of the future west platform at the Fashion Place station. Lovendahl Yard track work continues as switches, pre-curved rail and other special track is installed.

Jordan River Parkway Closure

In Midvale For TRAX Construction





Midvale – A section of the Jordan River Parkway trail near Gardner Village will close for two weeks beginning Monday, March 29, to accommodate TRAX construction in the area. The trail is planned to reopen on April 12 weather permitting.



The closure will extend from 7200 South to 7800 South in Midvale. No trail detour will be available for the duration of the work. A section of the trail is being relocated a few feet east to accommodate a widening of the railroad embankment for the future Mid-Jordan TRAX line.



“The closure is taking place as early as possible in the construction season to minimize the impact later in the spring when the trail use is much heavier,” Greg Thorpe, UTA project manager said. “We recognize how important the Parkway is for recreational use in this area.”



The 10.6-mile Mid-Jordan TRAX line will run from the Murray 6400 South TRAX station southwest through Midvale and West Jordan to the Daybreak development in South Jordan. It is projected to carry more than 5,300 riders per day at opening.

7200 South Westbound Closure
This Weekend Beginning Tonight





Midvale — Utah Transit Authority advises motorists of a road closure on 7200 South in Midvale this weekend, Jan. 8-10. 7200 South will be closed between approximately 400 West and 700 West for bridge work on the FrontRunner South commuter rail line.



The closure will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, and continue through Sunday night. The road will reopen no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11.



Traffic between State Street and I-15 on 7200 South will be restricted to local traffic only. I-15 on-ramps will be accessible for westbound traffic but traffic using the I-15 off-ramps will be detoured east to State Street.



Local traffic will be detoured south to Midvale Center Street or east to State Street. All westbound traffic will be detoured for the duration of the weekend work but one lane will maintained for eastbound travel through most of the weekend.



The closure is necessary for drilling a shaft for the center pier of the FrontRunner rail bridge that will span 7200 South.

Construction is progressing on UTA’s FrontRunner South Provo to Salt Lake Commuter Rail line.

Below is the FrontRunner South construction update for June 13 – 19.

Area 16 — Downtown Salt Lake City to 4500 South (Murray)

Construction Activity: There are no construction activities planned in this area this week. Traffic Impacts: There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area. Salt Lake Central Station: Station complete.

Area 15 — 4500 South (Murray) to Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale)

Construction Activity: Work will begin on a bridge that will span the eastbound lanes of I-215 this week. Crews will begin installing temporary shoring. Construction will continue this week on bridges over Center (7800 South) and Wasatch (8000 South) Streets in Midvale. These bridges will run parallel to existing Union Pacific Railroad main line bridges. Crews will continue installing temporary shoring on the south abutment of the Center Street bridge and begin installing H-pile on this abutment. They will also begin installing temporary shoring for the north abutment. At Wasatch Street, crews will continue abutment wall construction. Traffic Impacts: Lane and sidewalk closures will take place in conjunction with Wasatch and Center Streets bridge construction. Closures will alternate sides. At Wasatch Street, flaggers will be directing traffic and at Center Street eastbound traffic will be narrowed to one lane. Murray Station: No station construction activities to report.

Area 14 — Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale) to 14600 South (Bluffdale)

Construction Activity: Progress continues behind Salt Lake Community College’s Sandy Center Campus at 9800 South as crews construct a bridge that flies over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. This is the area where FrontRunner will move from the east side to the west side of the tracks. Construction will continue on a wall on the northeast side of the bridge, as will mass embankment work. Crews will also set forms and rebar for pier #5 and strip forms from pier #3. Crews will be clearing and grubbing the corridor between 10000 South and 10600 South and installing drainage near 11400 South in South Jordan. Traffic Impacts: Flaggers will be stationed at 9400 South in Sandy to direct truck traffic delivering lightweight fill to the site of the flyover bridge. The outside northbound lane on South Jordan Gateway at approximately 10400 South will be closed as flaggers direct truck traffic moving lightweight fill. At 14400 South in Bluffdale, flaggers will be stationed on either side of the bridge to help direct truck traffic entering and exiting the railroad corridor on the east side of the bridge. We ask that drivers please be patient and courteous while using the one-lane road under the bridge and that they please obey instructions from the flaggers for safety reasons. South Jordan Station: Lightweight fill for the flyover bridge construction is being stored at the site of the future South Jordan park and ride lot. Draper/Bluffdale Station: The location of this future station is to be determined.

Area 13 — 14600 South (Bluffdale) to Thanksgiving Point (Lehi)

Construction Activity: Crews continue to establish access and prepare the site along the railroad corridor in Bluffdale and Lehi. Excavation and trackway embankment work will continue throughout the area. Crews will place and backfill the north end box culvert for the Jordan and Salt Lake Canal bridge and also backfill the south end ramp. Wall construction will take place this week on the South Jordan Canal concrete channel and concrete will be poured for the Jordan River bridge footings. Sub grade stabilization will be placed for the Union Pacific siding relocation north of Clubhouse Lane in Lehi. Traffic Impacts: There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area.

Area 12 — Thanksgiving Point (Lehi) to Main Street (American Fork)

Construction Activity: Crews will continue to construct track for the new Union Pacific Railroad siding (and future UTA main line #2) on the west side of the corridor near Thanksgiving Point as well as begin clearing and grubbing more of the corridor. Traffic Impacts: There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area. Lehi Station: Now that the underground utility work at the future Lehi park and ride site is complete, crews will begin preparing the area for storm drain work.

Area 11 — Main Street (American Fork) to University Parkway (Orem)

Construction Activity: Trackway embankment work continues in American Fork from 200 South to 7350 West at Main Street, as well as at the sites of the future Vineyard and Orem Stations. On Thursday and Friday, a utility crew will extend a water casing at 400 South in Orem. Traffic Impacts: On Tuesday, June 16, flaggers will be directing traffic at 200 South in Lehi to support utility work. Flaggers will be stationed at the American Fork park and ride lot on 7750 North to direct truck traffic exiting the corridor and at Main Street and Millpond Road in Lehi to direct truck traffic entering the corridor. At 400 South in Orem there will be a lane shift on Thursday and Friday as crews conduct utility work in the shoulder. American Fork Station: No station construction activities to report. Vineyard Station: Crews will continue forming the platform footings for the future station and pour concrete on Thursday. Orem Station: Crews will form and pour a stem wall at the Orem park and ride site.

Area 10 — University Parkway (Orem) to Center Street (Provo)

Construction Activity: Significant progress has been made in Area 10 along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor between University Parkway in Orem and West Center Street in Provo. Crews have prepared a path for FrontRunner by grading and clearing the right-of-way and relocating water lines. Drainage and irrigation installations are generally complete in this area. At Union Pacific’s Lakota Junction just south of University Parkway in Orem crews will continue sub grade preparation and mass embankment work. Utility crews will be working along the right-of-way at 1500 North, 820 North, 200 North and 500 West. Traffic Impacts: In Provo there will be flaggers stationed at the following locations on the listed dates: · At 1500 North a single lane closure will occur on Wed., June 17, to support utility work · At 820 North Wed. – Fri. there will be a single lane closure while crews conduct utility work · Also at 820 North, starting on Thurs., there will be trucks entering and exiting the corridor · At 200 North trucks will be entering and exiting the corridor throughout the week; · At 500 West on Mon. and Tue. there will be a single lane closure to support utility work. Provo Station: No station construction activities to report.
